Answer: Ginger:

Amos Arthur (8) was b. 1836 Feb 7 in Franconia, Grafton, NH, son of Amos and Sally Russell. We do not have his d. date or location.  He m. 1st 1855 Aug 12, Fannie Carter of Brunswick, VT. We are not aware of any children that survived from this m. - there were no children in the family in the 1860 census. He m. 2nd 1864 Dec 19 Mary Ann Farmer in Morocco, IN. They had 8 children: Nancy Jane, Sally Olive, Alver Steven, Emma Rosella, Amos Henry, Charles H, Delphus Elijah, and Owen A.  Amos A (8)'s lineage was Amos (7), Abraham (6,5,4), Jonathan (3), Abraham (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). More details are available.

We are trying to database the Merrill/Merrell surname nationwide from the original immigrants right down to the present day for all the immigrant lines. So far we have over 60,000 Merrill males, plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate that there are well over 100,000 so we have a long way to go, and we need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible. We would be very interested in any detailed info on the Merrill surname descendants of Amos Arthur down to the present day.

Answer: Patrica:

We have information on no less than 26 Andrew Jackson Merrills in our files.  We need to have more information, like WHEN and WHERE they were born, married or died, in order to be sure we are talking about the right Andrew Jackson Merrill.  The more information you give in a query, the more likely someone will be able to help you.

Answer: Patrica:

We were able to find some information on your Andrew Jackson Merrill. In various records his name was spelled Merrill, Merrel, and Merrell as was his brother Emmet.  This may indicate he did not know how to spell it and the census taker spelled it the way it sounded. He didn't come from Ireland but was b. MO. His father was b. TN.

The 1900 census in Big Creek, Marion, AR gives the most information. Andrew J Merrill, 43, b. Jan 1857 in MO, father b. TN, Mother b. IL, m. 23 years;  wife Maude E, 36, July 1863 in AR, Fa b. KY, Mo b. MO, m. 23 years, 9 children, 7 living; James T, 19, June 1880, AR;  Melissa A, 16, Sep 1883, AR;  Robert, 14, Apr 1886, AR;  Idella, 11, Apr 1889, AR; Etta E, 7, Oct 1892, AR;  Effie E, 5, Apr 1894, AR; Bertha, 2, Jan 1898, AR.  This Maude E is Andrew's 1st wife. Living 2 doors away is Andrew's brother Emmet, 40, wife Sarah, 30 and family. Interestingly, there is an Enoch Priddy, 37, Victoria, 20 and daughter Annie, 10, next door.  You mentioned that one of Andrew's wives was a Preddie. One wonders if Maude E was a Priddy, or perhaps if Enoch Priddy d., Andrew could have m. 2nd his widow Victoria?

In the 1910, census Andrew is in Matney, Baxter, AR listed as: Jackson, 53, 3rd m. 0 years; Maude, 19, 1st m. 0 years, 0 children;  Offie [Effie in 1900], 14;  Bertha, 12;  Roy, 8;  Frederick, 2;  Thomas, 2.  This is your Maude, just m.  We believe that Roy probably belongs to the 1st wife and the twins belong to the 2nd wife,

In 1920, Andrew J is in White River, Marion, AR:  Andrew J, 62;  Maud M, 29; Frederick, 13; Theodore, 13;   Alma E, 8 1/12 [ca Dec 1911];  Myrtle B, 6 4/12 [ca Sep 1913].  Thomas and Theodore are obviously the same child.

We don't know Andrew's complete lineage, but we do know he was the son of James and 2nd wife Sarah Seagraves.  James is listed in Demand, Randolph, AR in 1840, and in Wright Co MO in 1850. In 1860 he is in Heartville, Wright, MO: James, 49, TN;  Sarah, 35, TN;  William E, 19, AR;  Mary J, 16, AR; Greene, 10, MO;  Elizabeth, 9, MO;  Charles A, 7, MO; A.J., 4;  Samantha, 5, MO;  Emmet H, 2, MO;  Sarah c, 3 mo.  Here Andrew is listed as A.J. and his brother Emmet is also here. They were next door in 1900.

Sorry we can't get you back any further than James, but at least we added to your knowledge.

Question: Shirley A Simpson wrote:

Do you have further information on Melville M Merrill who was born August 17 1832 and married Mary E Brown. Melville's parents were Nelson Merrill born April 3 1779 and Polly Goodwin born January 15 1801. Melville M Merrill was principal of the Naples Academy from its first session September 11, 1861 until 1866. I am trying to gather more information about him for the Naples, New York Library project.

Answer: Shirley:

We do not have much on Melville M other than his lineage.  In the 1860 census, we think he is the M. M., 27, b. NY, listed as a language professor in Matawan, Monmouth, NJ. We haven't found him in the 1870 or 1880 census.

Mellville M (7)'s lineage is Nelson (6), Martin (5), Eliakim (4), Isaac (3), John (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). More details are available.

Question: Ginger Merrill wrote:

im looking for my grandad and great grandad on this sight cant find them they are amos merrill and ransom could you help me find it tell me were to look

Answer: Ginger:

We sent you information on Amos Arthur (8) Merrill, his children, and his lineage back to immigrant Nathaniel. We do have a little bit of info on his grandson, Ransom Amos (10), 1893 May 29 - 1953 Jul 24, but were hoping that you could supply information on him and his descendants down to the present. We have that he m. 1915 Dec 2, Clara (Bradley) Ward, but have nothing on his children, grandchildren or great grandchildren. We depend on our correspondents to start with themselves and work backwards and share that info with us as we freely share the earlier info starting from the immigrant and working forward. Our database is not internet searchable, for personal security reasons, but we search it for anyone free of charge and share what we find.  All we ask is that folks share their info on recent generations down to the present.
