Question: Bill Kidder wrote:
My g-grandfather was Conant Soloman Hick (b. 23 May 1851 in ME, d. Mar 1917 in Maine). He m. Lena S Merrill on 13 Apr 1875 in Maine). Was she the daughter of William L Merrill of New Hampshire (b. abt 1820, d. aft 1880, m. Lucinda)? If so, which branch of the Merrill family did William! descend from?
Answer: Bill:
We do not know who your Lena S Merrill's parents were. We are quite sure she was not William L (7) and Martha Lucinda Stimson's child. In the 1880 Newport, Penobscot, ME census their Lena was 20, single and still living with her parents. In 1880, we did find your Conant S Hicks, 29, in Auburn, Androscoggin, ME with wife Lena F, 29, b. ME and children Laura, 3; Guy, 2; and Roy, 2 mo.
We don't know if they are related to your Lena, but right next door to Conant and Lena in 1880 is Stephen S Merrill, 45, b. ME, par. b. ME; 2nd wife Ruby A [Fulton], 33; Fred W, 20; Clarence A, 16; Charles C, 14; Jacob B, 7. This Stephen Stetson (8) m. 1st, 1858 Apr 4, Deborah S Royal, so Lena [b. ca 1851] cannot be their child. Lena was NOT in their family group in the 1860 or 70 census. In fact we don't find a Lena Merrill, age ca 19 in the 1870 ME census or a Lena age ca 9 in the 1860 census anywhere. We don't have a Lena b. ca 1851 in our Database of over 60,000 Merrill males plus wives and daughters.
Sorry we couldn't be more help.

Question: Sandra Starr wrote:
I am a descendent of Joseph Kellogg who came to America from Great Leighs, England around 1651 and settled in Hadley,Mass. I believe that his son, Deacon Samuel Kellogg (b.1662) married Sarah Merrill(b.1664-daughter of John Merrill) and that his great-grandson,Isaac Kellogg, born in Hartford, Conn in 1727 married Martha Merrill,(daughter of Jonathan Merrill) born in Hartford in 1728. I wonder if you have found any reference to these connections. Thanks in advance.
Answer: Sandra:
The Merrill and Kellogg families of Hartford have many interconnections. "A Merrill Memorial" by Samuel Merrill documents many of these intermarriages. While the book is out of print, the text is posted on the <Merrill.org> site on which you posted this query. I believe it is Deacon Samuel Kellogg's grandson Isaac Jr. [not great grandson] that m. Martha (5) Merrill [Jonathan (4), Daniel (3) John (2), Nathaniel (1)]. Two other children of his son Isaac also m. Merrills. Noah Kellogg m. Clemence (5) Merrill [Joseph (4), Abraham (3), John (2)] and Sarah Kellogg m. William (5) Merrill, brother of Martha above. While the Isaac Jr. Kellogg - Martha Merrill m. is not documented in AMM, it is documented in the Barbour Collection in Hartford, 1748 Jan 26.

Question: Ora Clark wrote:
For some time I have been searching for the parents of my gg grandmother Adeline Merrill, 1813-abt 1890. I recently learned that they were Sarah Rathbun and Roswell Pettibone Merrill born 1795. I have a document "Genealogy of the Pettibone family" which states that a Hepzibah Pettibone, born 1739, married a Noah Merrill and they had 4 sons; Noah, Freedom, Jeremiah and Roswell. No dates for the marriage or births were given. I have searched the Barbour Collection and found the birth of two Noah Merrill's listed, one born 10 Mar 1759 and the other 7 Dec 1765. No marriage for Noah or births for the four sons was recorded. Either one would seem to be a good candidate for Hepzibah's husband in spite of the disparity in their ages from Hepzibahs. I have an 1800 census record for Noah Merrill with Elijah Pettibone (a brother of Hepzibah) recorded prior to his name. Noah lists his age as 26-44 while his wife lists hers as over 45. Again, these ages are consistent with any of the dates given above but does not differentiate between the two Noahs. Also the children listed seem to be consistent with other information, assuming that Hepzibah had a daughter from a previous marriage which seems reasonable.
I have checked the Merrill Memorial and found the elder Noah listed as the son of Ephraim (#332) and Jerusha while the younger Noah is listed as the son of Ichabod (#561) and Mary. Unfortunately, the trail ends at those points in the Memorial. That is my tale to this point. Can you provide any help to decide which Noah is the correct one for the husband of Hepzibah Pettibone?
Ora Clark
Answer: Ora:
Noah (6) [Ephriam (5), Nathaniel (4), John (3,2), Nathaniel (1)] b. 1759 Mar 10, is the one who m. Hepsy Pettibone 1780 Aug 17 in Norfolk CT. They were in Norfolk, Litchfield, CT in 1790 and 1800, and in Orangeville, Genesee, NY in 1810, 1820, and 1830. The first time we found Roswell in the census was 1840 and at that time there was no daughter age 15-20 with them. I guess your Adeline was already m. by then. Who and when did she m.? We did not have record of her as Roswell's child. Do you have record of Roswell's other children? Roswell and Sarah Rathbone m. 1813 Jun 4. The other Noah, 1765, son of Ichabod, m. 1788 Apr 20, Zulema Flower in New Hartford, CT. He ended up in Whiteside Co, IL. Both Noah's were Revolutionary War Veterans.

Who are the parents of Capt. Augustus Merrill, Medal of Honor recipient,Civil War; Born in Byron, Maine, 4 October 1843. Enlisted in Lyndon or Litchfield, Maine. He was with Company "B" 1st Maine Infantry?
Answer: Lee:
Augustus Henry Merrill, 1843, was the son of Luther (7) and Sarah Green Merrill. His lineage is Augustus H (8), Luther (7, 6), Levi (5), Daniel (4), Moses (3), Daniel (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). More details are available.
We are Howard and Jean Merrill. For twenty five years we have been trying to database the Merrill/Merrell family nationwide from the original immigrants down to the present day for all immigrant lines. So far we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate there have been well over a100,000 so we have a long way to go, and need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations. We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible from us.
While our database is not internet searchable, we will be glad to search it for anybody and share what we find at no cost. All we ask is that folks share their Merrill data with us so that we can expand our database and do a better job of helping solve Merrill lineage problems.
We would be very interested in the details of how you descend from Capt. Augustus. We would like to bring this line down to the present day.

Howard & Jean:
1. Do you have any information on Leverett Bradbury Merrill, b. 1869, Wenham; m. 1893 Lucina (Luna) Cutler; 4 daughters (Bernice, Eloise (d. young), Ruth and Frances Joy. He was a vocalist in Boston for many years. Luna Shipman was a sister to my ggrandmother Anne Shipman Cutler (she died at age 28 in 1894). I show Leverett Merrill parents as Charles Merrill & Sarah M. Bradbury and his grandparents as Francis Merrill & Sarah Meldram based on old family information (not well documented).
2. On my paternal side we descend from Nathaniel Merrill. I have considerable information on our family from Betsy French Merrill (1785-1865) m. James Pettingell Currier of Salisbury, MA. Betsy was the last Merrill in the direct line. Our family continues via the Currier, Pike and Brown families -- all from Salisbury/Newburyport area. I would be happy to share what I have, if you are interested.
Thanks for your help, Mary Leidner Tifton, GA
Answer: Mary:
Your Leverett Bradbury is in our "Lineage Unknown" file, however, we can confirm what you have and push his lineage back one generation. We found Leverett in Boston in 1910 with Luna and three daughters. Do you have d. dates for Leverett and Luna, and who the daughters m.?
Charles Leverett, b. 1838 Oct 22 in Wenham, m. Sarah M Bradbury 1863 Oct 22 in Wenham. We found them in Wenham in 1870 and in Beverly in 1880, and back in Wenham in 1900. Do you have d. dates for Charles and Sarah?
Francis W, 1810 Feb 17, Rockport, MA to 1896 Aug 16, Wenham, m. 1830 Jun 17 Sarah A Meldram. They are listed in Wenham in 1840, 50, 60, 70, and 80.
Daniel b. ca 1785 Rockport, MA d. 1853 Jan 17 in Manchester, MA [reported from Wenham], m. int. 1804 Nov 3 Elizabeth Webber of Wenham. They are known to have had Daniel, ca 1805, George W, 1807, Francis W, 1810; John Hazen, ca 1813, but the census indicate more. Elizabeth d. 1827 Feb 28 and Daniel m 2nd 1827 Nov 28 Relief Lamson. We do not know who Daniel's parents were.
What is your Merrill line back from Betsey French. We don't have her listed as such in our Nathaniel descendant database? [over 57,000 individuals]

Question: Merrill McAlister wrote:
A story from my Grandmother. Two brothers left Boston and ventured to California during the gold rush. One ended up in oregon and the other around Colusa California. Both bought land. My great grandfather William Merrill/Mary Shiply and my grandfather Clarence Merrill/ Edna Fleming. I'm just getting started and would like to get in the right direction.
Can you get me started.
Answer: Merrill McAlister:
We would be glad to help, but we need more in the way of details. You said two brothers went to CA, but William and Clarence sound like father and son. Are these descendants of one of the brothers. We need the nity grity details. Do you have b. dates and locations for William and Clarence? You gave wives names, but no dates. Who were their children? when and where were they b.? When and where did they d.? Is your grandmother still living? If so, get as much information in as much detail as possible.
The old folks may not remember what they had for breakfast, but can recall in detail things from the distant past. She may have things at her fingertips, that you could not uncover in years of searching. The more information you can give us, the more likely we can be able to help you. In our database we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters. We use this database strictly to try and help folks like yourself solve Merrill lineage problems.
